Seldom has the term 'a legend in his own lifetime' been more accurately applied
than to Michael Oliver.
Here that lifetime is recalled in interviews with the people who knew him best,
his friends and family. They tell the story not just of the man who from nothing
created the greatest steam fair in the world, but of the family man as well.
Photographs kindly made available by the Oliver family and friends together with
the archive of video and photographic material produced and collected over more
than 40 years by Helmut and Jonathan Eckardt, help illustrate the life and times
of Michael Oliver MBE with, of course many appearances by, and words from the
man himself.

2008 40th Anniversary Great Dorset Steam Fair DVD
The essential guide to last year's (2008) 40th Great Dorset Steam Fair - good weather
and a mind boggling array of exhibits helped to create perfect filming conditions
for Jonathan Eckardt and his team of professional camera & sound people.
A specially produced DVD with extended coverage to celebrate the 40th Anniversary
Show to include several films on one DVD - which you can select from a menu list
at the beginning of the DVD.
- The Great Dorset Steam Fair 2008 - This is a general coverage of the 2008
show in the usual style - of the wide variety of exhibits, ranging from working
steam, organs, tractors, vintage vehicles, heavy horses, collections, displays,
the main steam arena, the old time fair and many working sections etc.
Running time 2 hrs approx.
- The 1969 40th Anniversary Re-creation Section - To celebrate the 40th Anniversary
Stephen Hubbuck approached the organisers of the Great Dorset with the idea of re-creating
the very first "Great Working of Steam Engines". The result was a wonderfully nostalgic
trip down memory lane to how rallies used to be. Very well received by the crowds
of people that visited this marvellous section - many calling for it to be put on
again! - This film uses a mix of interviews, commentary, footage taken in 2008 and
Helmut Eckardt's 1969 black and white photographs.
Running time 35 mins approx.
- Steam Heavy Haulage Road Run - Two weeks before the Show a spectacular steam
road run took place. This was organised by Dave Allen the section leader of the
heavy haulage. Involving three engines hauling the Pickford's low loader trailer
plus a support engine on a 20 mile journey from Henstridge to the Steam Fair showground
- negotiating narrow bridges and a number of hills on the way.
Running time 22 mins approx
- Massey Ferguson 50th Anniversary - To commemorate Massey Harris joining forces
with Ferguson 50 years ago to create Massey Ferguson, this special section charts
development from the famous "Grey Fergi" through the Red/Grey tractors such as the
MF35 and 135 to today's world leading products. This film gives an in depth view
of this first class section.
Running time 20 mins approx.
- The build of of the 2008 show - Follows the teams of staff and workers from
the first day they gain access to the showground, to give a real insight into the
work that goes on even through bouts of atrocious weather to provide the facilities
and services which are essential to the show.

and interviews from the 2008 event.
